Thanksgiving campground style

November 20, 2017

Kelly's Countryside RV campground, in Callahan, FL, is probably the smallest park we have stayed at to date. There are maybe about 60-65 sites with most spots occupied by full-time residents or snow-birds. It is family owned and operated, by the Kelly’s. Mr. Kelly founded the campsite years ago by having fires in his yard and campers would just show up to hang out. Up North, we would have those people arrested, but down here they were welcomed and a campground bloomed. Now his children, grand children and even great grand children help pitch-in.

This is a very tight-knit, friendly community. Where everybody seems to know everybody, and visitors don't remain strangers for long.  Yesterday evening, the owners of the park hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for all the campers. They were gracious enough to supply all the meats (turkey and ham) with the campers bringing a covered dish.

I must say, it was one of the most delicious Thanksgiving meals I have had (other than those made by Lorraine and other close family members, of course). Everything was fresh and homemade. Lorraine made some delicious hand-mashed potatoes and gravy.

Some of the more experienced eaters brought their own trays!

Although we missed out on the 50-50 drawing, we enjoyed talking with the people around us (a few had such a strong southern accent, we couldn't decipher what they were saying. So we did a lot of smiling and nodding).

Much to our surprise, two young ladies in the table next to us overhead us saying that we were from Delaware. Much to our surprise, and delight, they too were from our home state, but more on this tomorrow.
